Lebkuchen Recipe - Gingerbread!

Gingerbread Recipe

**If you want a big house, make two or three of these recipes.  **

**Don’t forget you need a floor for your house.**

 Ingredients

1 tablespoon butter softened

6 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

6 tablespoons double-acting baking powder

1 ½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon salt

¾ cup honey

1 ¾ cups sugar

¼ cup butter

1/3 cup lemon juice

1 tablespoon finely grated lemon peel

1 egg

1 egg yolk

Recipe

1.	With a paper towel, lightly coat a large jelly roll pan (cookie sheet with sides) with 1 tablespoon soft butter.
2.	Sprinkle ¼ cup flour into the pan, and tip it from side to side to coat it evenly.  Then turn it over and knock out the excess.  Set the pan aside.
3.	Sift 6 cups of flour, baking power, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt together into a large mixing bowl and set it aside.  This is called the flour and spice mixture.
4.	Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Put the oven rack in the middle position.
5.	In a large 4-5 quart saucepan (like you kind you boil spaghetti noodle in) bring honey sugar and butter to a boil over high heat, stirring with a large spoon until the sugar is dissolved and the butter melted.
6.	Remove the pan from the heat, mix in the lemon juice and lemon peel and cool to room temperature.
7.	Beat in 2 cups of the flour and spice mixture from #3.
8.	Add the egg and egg yolk and then beat in the remaining 4 cups of the flour and spice mixture from #3.
9.	Flour your hand lightly and knead until the dough is smooth, pliable and still slightly sticky.  If it is too moist to handle.  Beat in more flour by the tablespoon.
10.	Place the dough in the jelly roll pan (cookie sheet with sides).  With a slightly floured rolling pin, press and roll the dough out as evenly as possible.  Forcing it into the corners with your fingers.
11.	Bake for 35 minutes, or until the gingerbread is firm and the top brown.
12.	Wait 5 minutes then cut the gingerbread into the shapes you want for your house.
13.	Wrap them in wax paper or syran wrap and bring them to school in a cardboard box.

Hausaufgaben: Lesestueck - Read the story and answer the questions. 

“Entschuldigung!” sagt Jena. Jena geht ins Geschäft mit Fledermausmann. Die Verkäuferin, Katze Frau, sagt “Miau. Oh Guten Tag!”  Jena und Fledermausmann möchten die Schulsachen kaufen – Bleistifte, Kulis, Radiergummis, Hefte…

Fledermausmann hat eine schlechte Note in Mathe. Ach nein!  Er fragt “Was kostet der neue Taschenrechner da?”  Katze Frau sagt “Da? Oder dort drüben?” Fledermausmann zeigt auf die Ecke. Da in der Ecke!  Katze Frau sagt “Oh der ist SEHRRRRRRRRR teuer. Oh nein. 1.000 EURO kostet er.” Aber Feldermausmann sagt “Kein Problem. Ich bin reich. Ich habe VIELLLLLLLL Geld!” Fledermausmann gibt Katze Frau 1.000 EURO und sagt “Tschüs”.

Jena hat eine sehr gute Note in Deutsch aber eine sehr schlechte Note in Englisch. Ach nein! Jena möchte Hefte und Bücher und Kulis und Bleistifte kaufen. “Hallo, Katze Frau. Wo sind die Hefte und Bücher und Kulis und Bleistifte? Da? Dort drüben?”  Katze Fraus Kopf spinnt und explodiert.

Jena findet die Bleistifte und sieht den Preis und sagt “Oh sie sind sehr billig! Sie kommen aus China!” Fledermausmann sagt “Hallo, Jena. Ich bin reich. Ich bin Fledermausmann. Ich habe VIELLLLLL Geld. Ich kaufe dir die Bleistifte.” Jena sagt “Errrrrrrrr nein. Geh weg, du Idiot! Ich bin stark wie ein Tiger!” Sie schlägt Fledermausmann ins Gesicht und sagt “Auf Wiedersehen”.

1.     How do you say excuse me in German?

2.     What kind of grades do Batman and Jena have? Which subjects?

3.     Is the calculator expensive or cheap? Is that a problem?

4.     Why does Batman have a lot of money?

5.     Why are the pencils so cheap?

6.     Does Jena accept Batman’s offer?

7.     What happens in the end?

8.     Write a 6 line dialogue between a salesperson and another character. Make sure to buy school supplies and comment on the prices.

Stollen - Pfeffernuesse - und Nutella!
Stollen is a holiday favorite in Germany and it contains marzipan - which is a mixture of sugar and almonds. Pfeffernuesse or Pepper Nuts are small cookies covered in powdered sugar that look like snow! Nutella - well, we know what that is!

PRUEFUNG AM DONNERSTAG!! Get ready for your test next Thursday. On Friday, we will make gingerbread houses or structures. :)

Use "Halb" to indicate "half way to the next hour"
4:30 = halb 5
5:30 = halb 6
6:30 = halb 7

Tomorrow we will use your digital clocks to tell time. We will also learn more "magic words" to tell time.
